I purchased an Eb and an alto clarinet at an estate sale, both of which reeked
terribly. I went to the local drug store and found a couple of boxes of little
cedar balls, designed to moth-proof drawers. I put a half dozen in both cases
and changed them every month or so. It took a while (six months), but they did
help the smell!
Somewhere in here, there has to be a joke about cedar balls...
