Subj: [kl] Update on Don Casadonte's Work & More

I had a long phone conversation with Don Casadonte today - Don doesn't
have email at the present, and finally reached me by phone.

For those of you who don't know, Don did his Doctoral work on reeds and
mouthpieces, studying vibrational modes of reeds and the fluid dynamics
of the reed, mouthpiece, and clarinet combinations. He took movies of
the mouthpiece and reed in action and did computer simulations.

Over the next few months the entire dissertation will be placed on
Sneezy, including the illustrations, movies, and FE models. It should
make for interesting reading. I'll keep the list posted on
developments - the first parts of the text (about 400 pages) should
start to show up early next year.

Another topic:

I receive "comps" (complimentary gifts) occasionally but I don't report
on them in public; I only discuss those things I've bought with my own
money. However, I came into the possession of a book which discusses
clarinet intonation, including the rationale and effects of changing the
cork bumpers/key heights and taping the holes (with diagrams of the
shape and size of the pieces of tape for different holes). There's more
(resonance fingerings, etc.) that's available elsewhere, but this is the
first book I've seen that discusses the how and why of the cork/tape
methods. I want to stay ethical and keep from promoting things I get for
free; however, at least to me this was just too unusual _not_ to share.
