Despite the skepticism I have continuously displayed toward the authenticity
of the McAllister "X" concerto, I have had a gnawing feeling in the back of
my mind that I had, in fact, heard or read of this piece somewhere.
Michael's message finally triggered my memory as to where I might have read
about it. On page 75 of the May/June, 1997 issue of "The Clarinet" is the
following entry under "Recitals and Concerts, Faculty and Professional ..."

"Diane Cawein, clarinet soloist with the Unviersity of Nebraska-Lincoln Wind
Ensemble, MENC Convention, Peoria, Illinois, January 31, 1997, and University
of Nebraska-Lincoln, February 16, 1997. 'X' Concerto for Clarinet
(premiere), McAllister."

There it is in black and white (or rather, there it will be, if you choose to
check out the journal). I hope, if I request a copy of this concerto from
the composer that he won't hold my earlier comments against me. (If the
auction is a marketing ploy, it has worked in my case and it certainly got
the piece exposure to a target market, even if unintentionally.) There is,
however, a part of me that almost wishes this had been a hoax. It would have
been so DELICIOUS.

Best regards,
Jack Kissinger
