Subj: [kl] McAllister Concerto
Date: Mon, 14 Dec 1998 11:14:37 -0500

Here are the program notes written by the composer which were taken
from a program when the piece was done by Diane Cawein and the
University of Nebraska Wind Ensemble.

QUOTE
"X" is a work that is inspired by the "grunge" style of [rock] music.
The music of Nirvana and Alica in Chains was a particular influence on
this piece. The second movement is based on the song "Where Did You
Sleep Last Night," which is based on eight-bar blues format. This song
originates from an old Appalachian folk song titled: "To the Pines...To
the Pines". "X" is in three movements and yses resonance and
non-traditional trills. Like the "grunge" style, this work, with its
explosive driving sections and contrasting psychedelic passages,
represents the energy and emotions of the "X" generation.

In so far as the validity of the auction, all I can say to you is that
the email address listed in concordance with the auction is indeed Mr
McAllister's. Or at least, this is the address that he gave me when I
spoke to him on the phone the other day to obtain materials for my
pending performance of the concerto.

Parts may only be obtained through Mr. McAllister as they have not been
published to date. He charges a nominal fee of $20.00 (the same price
as the Bolcom Concerto I might add) for the clarinet and piano version
and one recording (your choice of either wind ensemble or string
orchestra).

To respond to prior accusations that I am involved in a hoax (thank you
David Blumberg for your defense on my behalf), I certainly an NOT
involved in any such thing. Is it such a problem for me to post a
piece of valid information to the klarinet list without being accused
of being some form of promotional mercenary? I'm a very straight up
guy who will be honest sometimes to the point ot blatancy, but hey...
it's honest.

I haven't heard the piece, as my copies of things are in the mail to me
as I type this, so I have no opinion to offer in so far as what I pe
rsonally think of the piece. Of his work, well a lot of people are
playing the piece and The Verdehr Trio has commissioned him to write
for them as well, so how bad can he really be? I'll be sure to post my
opinion of "X" as soon as I've had a chance to look at it and hear it.

Do with this information as you wish, but don't be so quick to accuse
me of something I would never be a part of. And thanks again David :)

Seasons Greetings,
Michael Norsworthy
