I have to agree with Bill Hausman regarding the Selmer professional clarinet
he plays vs. the Buffet R13. Last year I acquired a Selmer Series 9 (predates
Bill's Series 10) with the intention of selling it immediately because it was
in mint condition. But when I played the Selmer, I agonized about whethet to
keep it and sell my beloved R13! I found the Selmer to be much easier to play,
with less resistance throughout. I played the Selmer for a couple of weeks but
decided, after all, to stay with the R13. The tone of the Selmer was very good
but on the bright side, even with the wood mouthpiece/BG ligature that I was
using on my Buffet. What clinched things for me was that the Selmer's
intonation was more difficult to control in an ensemble setting. Maybe I'm
just used to focusing with the R13. Anyone searching for a new (or used)
professional instrument should certainly consider a Selmer and "suffer" the
same indecision that Bill and I experienced!
