If you re-read my original response, I said that the R13 was "probably" the
model for John. I think it is unrealistic to assume that any young person will
be able to try 20 R13s or 20 this-n-that models from any company. If there is
a music store in my state that stocks such largesse, I would love to know
about it.

Meantime, I was only suggesting that John has to start somewhere in his search
for a new clarinet. An R13 would be the logical choice given the fact that the
first one he tried (though a loaner) gave him good tone and responsiveness.

Of course, if it were "practical" to do so, I would encourage John to try
EVERY make and model of pro clarinet available. And then every possible
mouthpiece/ligature/barrel setup, as well. But I doubt that John and his
parents have the time and money resources to do that. Plus, the Woodwind &
Brasswind or Giardinelli's or XYZ Co. might get a bit tired restocking the
instruments John returns ;-)

By the way, I do not have any financial interest in Boosey & Hawkes, Buffet,
etc. I am speaking from my own personal prejudice mixed with my desire to make
John's search a little more organized.
