I have a question. There is something that has always bothered me about
this piece.

Just before the cadenza pause in the final variation, the orchestra
comes to a full root position close in B flat major, instead of a
six-four, second inversion chord, with F in the bass, as you would
expect.

This makes the end very uncomfortable. You can sort of patch it up in
the cadenza, but it's not satisfactory stylistically, IMO.

The easiest solution would seem to be to rewrite the last four
orchestral chords *before* the cadenza, ending on a second inversion.

Is there any justification, other than discomfort, for doing this? What
is the status of the manuscript?
