<Would it be save to say that Rossini's Introduction, Theme, and Variations
is
a show piece very much like many of Weber's works? Or is there more to the
piece than the obvious?

I would agree that it is a showpiece, but I am certainly no expert. I do
have at least a shred of evidence, in that it's on a CD with the standard
Weber repertoire. Even more convincing is the fact that it's played by
Charlie Neidich - he probably wouldn't play it if it weren't showy. He does
do just that - be showy - quite well, I must admit. Between taking the
third-to-last movement at about 6000 beats per minute and tonguing the last
movement of Weber Concerto 2, I would say he is one of the best show-offs
I've ever heard.
