Subj: [kl] Girko "canned" over a bottle?
Date: Fri, 4 Dec 1998 02:16:03 -0500

Is everybody aware that Steve Girko was fired from the
Dallas Symphony last month for allegedly steeling a case
of very expensive wine at a DSO fundraiser? The rumor
mill has it that he was caught with the goods, after
which he subsequently returned the unopened portion,
paid for what he had consumed, and was then handed his
walking papers. I assume there's an appeals process
in action over this whole thing, but if the termination
is final, it almost seems a fitting way to go. The reason
for the firing, however, sounds more like an excuse to
get rid of him, rather than bona fide legal grounds
for dismissal. He does have a contract, after all.
Meanwhile, Paul Garner has been getting in a lot more
time in the Principal chair, and doing a very nice job
of it, despite the circumstances.
