Sounds like the Rubank series to me. Was one elementary level and one an
intermediate/advanced? If so, it's DEFINITELY the Rubank. As I remember,
the elementary one's cover is always yellow and the next one's is orange.

If it is the Rubank series they are still in print. I just bought Book 2
which is the one I think you're looking for.
