IMHO, no clarinet "sucks." Obviously professional models are better than student
models, but it is the PLAYER that makes the music. I am not saying that you are a
bad player, but the best players can make a not-so-good clarinet sound good.

You are on the right track by checking reeds and ligature adjustment. Part of the
problem may be reed strength. What is your mouthpiece and tip opening and your
reed strength? You may have a mismatch, so you might consider it. In addition,
you might also want to pay attention to your emborchure. What is happening when
you sqeak? This might help you to solve the problem.
