Naturally, because this is an involuntary muscular movement, involving the
muscles of the throat, and the player can't maintain a steady supply and
pressure of air. Several times over the years, I have heard people
speculate that it is due rather to the fact that the gases released
contain a higher percentage of nitrogen, or carbon dioxide, or something
else, but have never seen any report of proof, or even experimentation.
Can anyone cite any references?
