We were taught in Air Force physiological training (altitude chamber) that
oxygen starvation (hypoxia) is actually very insidious. You must be
trained to recognize your own particular symptoms (dizziness, hot flashes,
euphoria, tunnel vision, etc.) or you may not recognize it until it is too
late to take conscious action. Carbon monoxide poisoning works the same
way, and alcohol, by a different mechanism, produces very similar effects.
