Indents on reed butt

When the cane is split into long pieces, it is then cut into pieces
slightly longer than reed lengths.
The pieces of cane have to be flattened by one method or other.
There is a tool that holds the piece of cane between "jaws" and then the
reed is flattened.
These 'Jaws' create the dent we see on the butt on the reed.
Of course, the other side is not seen anymore since the reed is cut
down , vamp etc.
That's what I think these dents on the butt are.
