Roger forgot one--the "wall" test.

This test keeps me out of the vile habit of having a bunch of bad reeds
rattling around in my case for years. In college (back when mastodons
roamed the Earth and I was really, really poor) I would never throw a
reed away, thinking somehow that it would get better or I may need it
etc.

Truth is, bad reeds never get better. They just get older. So, after I
try to adjust them and they still don't work, I give them the "wall
test." I test it by pushing its tip into the wall. Hard.
