I also play V12 3½'s... they're giving me alot of trouble as well. I got
this from my friend Mark Bradley.. he's also on the clarinet list. (Mark,
I hope you don't mind me quoting you)

"When buying a box of V12 3's, you will get reeds varying from 2.5 to
3.5, not to mention that many will just be plain unusable because the
heart is off-center or some other fundamental mistake. The cut on
Vandorens are especially sloppy I have found, sometimes actually
resembling single cut rather than double cut. If you buy a box of Rico
GC 3's you will find reeds from 3 to 3.5 but nothing under that, so if
you need to adjust it you'll have some cane to work with. The cut on
these is remarkably even and I've never seen anything like it--each reed
is exactly the same. The cane is supposedly of superior quality but
that's really an objective statement. The tone quality is no less than
with the Vandorens. The only problem I have found is finding a strength
that suits me. When meeting with Gerry Labelle, the B&H marketing
manager, he said that recently the GC's did away with quarter strenghts
but wish they hadn't since I could really use a 3.75 of these reeds.

You can probably find some free samples from a local music store--I got
tons when I went to one in Montréal. I haven't tried any of the regular
but I like the thick blank very much. ....."

hope that helped! :)
