From: "Mark A. Bradley" <markb@-----.com> Subj: [kl] Grand Concert Select Thick equivalent of V12 Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 04:59:46 -0500
I've recently switched to the grand concert select thick since I
couldn't handle a reed rush if it was my own hand and the V12's were
just too inconsistent.
A few advantages to the GC reeds that were pointed out by Canada's
marketing director over dinner (thanks M. Kloc!), if you buy a box of GC
3 1/2's you will get reeds from 3 1/2 up to but not including 4. This
is so if you need to soften it you will have some cane to work with.
Vandoren will include reeds that are softer, and then you have to throw
them out or give them to a less fortunate player.
I used V12 3's and then bought a box of 3's and 3 1/2's to see which I
liked. Some of the 3's seem too soft at this point so I'm not sure how
much use I can get from these. Some of the 3 1/2's are too hard but
most of them are right where I need them. It's hard to say since some
of the 3's I will probably be able to use well too. Best bet would
probably be to get 3 1/2's and then adjust the ones that are harder.
Of the 20 reeds only one is a lost cause (with the exception of the 3's
that are too soft for me--my fault!), but after playing on it for awhile
it looks like I could get at least ONE rehearsal out of it. Big change
over the V12's! They all have almost equal tone qualities, which is
excellent and no change for the worse over Vandorens.
One thing I was wondering about is the shape of the cut. The 3 1/2's
have a different shape cut than the 3's. I tried some free samples of
both strenghts and they had the same cut (like the 3 1/2's now) but now
the 3's are the same shape that are found on V12's...does this make much
of a difference? I tried the reed clipper on some but they made them
tooooo hard for me. I believe that they are moving towards the vandoren
shape so odds are I won't have to worry about it in the future since I
have a vandoren mouthpiece.
Good luck Soo and odds are you will find these Ricos a pleasant change
over the Vandorens in terms of consistency.
