I like to think of it as two trios (violin and two violas, plus,
clarinet and two horns) with the addition of cello and double bass.

Again, since no-one has answered this, there's what I think of twenty
years down the line as a nice recording (I'm on it:-) by the Nash
ensemble, on the CRD label, coupled with the Nonet. It features some
spectacular playing by Tony Halstead on second horn. This is the
virtuoso part, and I remember that when he wasn't available we just
didn't programme the piece.

The record, along with another disc of the Quintet and Septet by the
same group, may also shortly be available on the Web, for those of you
with the technical wherewithal to cope with Liquid Audio and CD burning.
I'll keep you posted.
