According to the "Swing, Swing, Swing" biography Benny Goodman switched to a
double lip embouchure - for classical only - when he studied with Reginald
Kell. According to the biography Kell thought that was a mistake because he
felt that Goodman should play consistently with the same embouchure - either
double or single lip - but not both. Reportedly, as Goodman got older he
would sometimes forget in the middle of a performance which embouchure he
was using and he would have trouble with getting out some notes or mess up
his intonation as a result.
