In a message dated 98-11-18 21:10:39 EST, you write:

<< In this booklet a repair professional, an immigrant from USSR, advised to
change octave key from cylindrical one to conical one to improve throat tone.I
interpreted the 'key' seem to mean the cylinder beneath the left hand thumb
key which peretrates the bore. >>

It could also be the PAD on the register key, and not the metal sleeved tone
hole covered by the LH thumb, or possibly the register tube which the pad
covers. Steve Roberts, a professional clarinetist and instrument technician
in Los Angeles, bevels/chamfers the edges of the cork pad covering the
register key to improve the throat Bb and basically "free up" the air stream.
This beveling could make the pad "conical" -- or at least a truncated cone.
Perhaps Av Galper and his followers could shed some light on this. Seems
difficult to fabricate a conically shaped register tube?
