I have already replied to the list on this subject and stated that
there is no definitive information that would allow one to conclude
on the date when this fragment was written down. There is no
evidence that permits a serious and informed conclusion.

The paper type on which this fragment was written was used by
Mozart as early as the hornconcerto, K. 447 and as late as the
fragment for clarinet, basset horn and three strings, K. 580b.

The basset horn sketch that developed into K. 622 is given the
K. listing of 621b which, intheory, puts the work into 1791, but
that was a guess in the first place and no new evidence has yet
surfaced to make a better guess.

The answer below is very distubing. A student asks his teacher
about the work and is told, in effect, that these things are not
important for the performer. "Don't argue, just play it" is
not an acceptable answer and no student should ever accept it.
