Subject: Smell
I just bought a wood used Leblanc, Noblet clarinet and was wondering if it
is normal for wood clarinet to smell. It looks like it is great condition,
but has a smell. The case in which it cam does not smell. Any suggestions?

It is entirely normal for a Clarinet to smell if it was not taken care of
properly. Not swabbing the bore, and letting it sit in a damp area will
cause mold and mildew to occur. I find that to be a very common problem.
Replacing the pads, having the keys dipped in a solution (repairmen have
it) that will clean them really well, and cleaning the bore out
professionally MAY fix it, but don't count on it. I have no tolerance for
that kind of odor.
