Forgetting a clarinet

When I was younger and living in Palestine (pre Israel) I was at some
rehearsal. It was in the home of Walter Levin, who I believe is the
leader of the LaSalle string quartet. This was in Tel Aviv.

After the rehearsal, I made my way home. Before getting to the bus
station., I entered a coffee shop to have a cold drink. Then I got on
the bus on my way home to a place called Ramat Gan.
When I got off the bus, I realized that I didn't have my clarinet with
me. I jumped back on the bus and ran to the back where I had sat and-
NO clarinet.

I got off the bus and decided to go back to Tel Aviv, to the coffee
shop. When I got to Tel Aviv, I went into the shop and asked whether
they had found a case. Since I was edgy about it, it seemed to me they
said,"we didn't see any clarinet case."

For two days I wondered what had happened. Eventually someone told me
that I had forgotten the clarinet at the house of Walter Levin.

Just last week I visited Israel and a former pupil of mine there, Sigal
Hechtlinger (formerly the Faculty of Music, U. of Toronto) told me the
following story:
She had forgotten her clarinet case at a bus stop. Half an hour later
when she realized her forgetfulness, she rushed back to where she had
left it.

In Israel, as soon as a suspicious package or case is spotted, they
bring in the sappers to blow it up.

And this is what happened here. Upon seeing such a suspicious package,
the sappers were called in.
They blew open the lock of the case, figuring that if there were any
explosives, the whole thing would blow up.

When Sigal got back they had just blown up the lock but that destroyed
the front clarinet, the Bb.
The A was undamaged.

The moral of the story, if you visit Israel do not forget your horn
anywhere!
