I have played a performance of Mahler's 1st when the principal horn
player, who was either irresponsible, disorganized or psychotic, left his
music in another town, 45 miles away from the performance. He didn't
discover this until about 10 minutes before the concert was to start. He
offered to try to play the symphony from memory, but we, knowing him,
decided that would be far too risky. So, he was provided with a page
turner and the conductor's score, while the conductor conducted from an
extra first violin part. Needless to say, this didn't make the other
members of the orchestra feel too secure. In fact, everyone was quite
disturbed except for the aforementioned principal horn player. He didn't
seem at all concerned.
