Arnold,

Moving to a softer reed and a more open mouthpiece isn't going to improve
your tone, I suspect. Recently, I bought a Selmer C* mouthpiece (along with
an old junky clarinet) and found to my surprise that it plays wonderfully on
my 1950 Selmer BT horn. The C* has a narrow tip and a long facing according
to the Selmer web site and I use Grand Concert 3 1/2 reeds with it.
Previously, I've been using a Vandoren 2RV with the BT, but I like the C*
even better.
