Folks,

Vulcanization is not to stop rubber perishing, or to make it pliable, but
to make it tough enough to use for tires, raincoats, rubber boots ... and
clarinets. Rubber in its natural state is soft and crumbly, like an artgum
eraser. Goodyear's discovery of a process to make it useful was the
foundation of his company, which for a long time dominated the durable
rubber goods market.
