This reminds me of something interesting I heard on a National Public
Radio story several years ago:
The story was on the Princeton University Recording Lab, which had
state-of-the-art variable-speed turntables, etc., for allowing the
researchers to study and preserve old recordings. They told an anecdote
about a famous male opera singer whom most people had heard through his
recordings. It had been assumed that he was a tenor because of the
quality of the recording process at that time. When the Princeton lab
decided to adjust the speed of the turntable to match the actual pitch
of the music, it was discovered that his voice was actually a lot lower
than people had thought!
