[Excuse my de-lurk, I'll be around later in the week with an introductory
essay entitled "What the clarinet means to me" in fifty words or less (if
you're really lucky).]

Actually, vulcanization makes rubber stronger and less sticky. The effect
of adding sulfer is to cross link the polymer chains. Sulfer is in the same
series as oxygen and can form two covalent bonds at an angle of somewhere
around 120 degrees. So, the long polymer chains will have sulfer atoms
linking one to another like rungs of a ladder, which as you can imagine,
makes a tougher material, since the molocules can't move independently of
one another.

I think it's meant to stop it "perishing", i.e., combining slowly with
atmospheric oxygen, with deleterious effect.
