Subj: [kl] Eb intonation range
Date: Fri, 13 Nov 1998 23:21:16 -0500

I'm evaluating Eb clarinets right now, for purchase, and I have a
question as to what to expect in regard to the limits of intonation. It
is flat on bottom F and E, but I get the impression that is pretty
common and of little concern, since those aren't notes often used or
exposed. It's become apparent to me that the question is not so much as
to whether "it plays in tune," but rather whether "it can be played in
tune" with relative ease. Well, this one - I won't mention the brand,
to prevent prejudice - is remarkably in tune from bottom F# up to high
D, and then goes sharp and then flat above that. Are these notes of any
significance in most band literature? I am NOT going to be playing Till
Eulenspiegel in this lifetime, just community band and clarinet choir
music, and I can get this one for a very good price. If that range is
all that I'll probably ever need, it would be a great buy. Advice,
please?
