I agree with Ed Lacy's post and have never missed a performance due to
illness. I have had this bad experience though. Sometimes when I have a
cold or bronchitis, which I tend to get in the winter, playing the clarinet
brings on a cough. I imagine it's the air in my throad that just encourages
coughing but I've had this happen several times where as soon as I start to
play I start coughing. I remember one desperate situation where I had a
thermos of hot water next to me and a handful of cough drops on my stand
just to get through...and yes it is possible to play with a cough drop in
your mouth---just not recommended. Has anyone else had this expeience?
