Subj: [kl] A VIRTUOSO SERPENT CONCERT
Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 04:38:23 -0500

COME TO AN EXTRAORDINARY AND UNUSUAL CONCERT PERFORMANCE:

DOUGLAS YEO,
Bass trombonist of the BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, will
perform as SERPENT SOLOIST on

NOVEMBER 15, 1998

with the CONNECTICUT VALLEY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Tibor Pustai, conductor.

Mr. Yeo, who is the only professional player of the Serpent in the
United States, will play Serpent in the orchestra for Mendelssohns's
CALM SEAS AND PROSPEROUS VOYAGE Overture; will play with members of the
Orchestra in a Harmonie-musick arrangement of the BEETHOVEN SEPTET in
Eb, opus 20, from 1812; and will present the first US Performances
outside of Boston, of the CONCERTO for SERPENT by the modern English
composer SIMON PROCTOR. Also programmed is the REQUIEM FOR OUR TIME for
brass and percussion ensemble by the Finnish composer E. Rautavaara.

Mr. Yeo has performed as Serpent soloist in the Proctor Concerto with
the BOSTON POPS under John Williams and with the BOSTON CLASSICAL
ORCHESTRA, has played the Serpent in the North American and Asian
premiere performances of Berlioz' MESSE SOLONELLE by the BSO under Seiji
Ozawa, and has appeared in recital on the Serpent and lectured at the
Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He will demonstrate the instrument
informally during the concert.

The Serpent, made of curved, leathered wood with fingerholes and a brass
or wooden mouthpiece, was used in Western Europe from the 15th to 19th
centuries. Its sound is elegant and mellow, not unlike that of a
euphonium. Tuba, trombone/euphonium, and horn players will particularly
enjoy this concert; but it will interest anyone who loves wind music,
musical instrument history, or period performances.

The concert is at 3 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, Sigourney Street at
Farmington Avenue, Hartford CT. Tickets are $10/$7 students. Advance
tickets may be guaranteed through ROBERT HOWE, telephone 413 506 8434,
Fax 413 525 5170 or email <arehow@-----.
