I'm considering buying a used Eb clarinet. I haven't found one yet, I am
just
now starting to look. If you have one let me know what it is, how it is and
what the price is. From my limited experience I have the perception that
playing one in tune is very difficult. I do not have a good ear for what
changes need to be made while playing so I need to make the instrument work
as
well as possible so as not to offend my peers, coductor and audience. I have
heard that a Buffet Eb with XYZ barrel and ABC mouthpiece makes an Eb play as
well as a good Bb. Any comments on this as well as recommendations? All
"better" brands of clarinets considered.

Jack...Of all my "set-ups" I am happiest with my Eb. Funny, because it's what
I play least. I was VERY fortunate to puchase an EXCELLENT Buffet R-13 Eb back
in the mid 70's. MANY people have offerred to purchase this instrument from
me.

I had a mouthpiece made for me by Mr. Borbeck, who was careful to match the
facing to waht I was playing on Bb. I have several of his mouthpieces, but the
Eb is the best. Did I luck out again? As a backup, I have a Vandoren B-44 that
was refaced by Elmer Aiello of Leblanc. This is also a very playable
mouthpiece.

For reeds I use Vandoren V-12 Bb soprano reeds cut off at the butt about 5
millimeters (see previous posts for a discussion of this). I do ot like, or
use, regular Eb clarinet reeds. If they are responsive enough to make a good
sound, they dont hold up for high register playing.

So look for a used Buffet Eb.I have a friend who just purchased a used
clarinet from a retired symphony player. The horn is old....but in really
beautiful conditon.
