My house guest, the pianist Robert Levin, is here to do 6 performances
of the Mozart piano concerto in c minor, K. 491. Now for those of you
who have played the work, you are aware of how remarkable the wind
writing is for this masterpiece.

Accompanying Levin, who will be playing on an 18th century piano is
an orchestra of original instruments including Don McColl on clarinet
(from Seattle) and a lovely woman player from Boston (whose name
I never got.

Today I spent the entire afternoon listening to the rehersal where
the work was done twice with improvised cadenzas and some of the most
magnificent wind playing I've heard in a long while.

Oh frabjous day!

Now I am listening to my gift of a recording of the Mozart
piano/wind quintet, K. 452 with Frank de Bruno (oboe), Tony
Pay (clarinet, of course), Danny Bond (bassoon), Tony Halstead
(horn) and Levin on the piano.

There are not as many good days as this one around.
