It would be a wasted trip, I imagine. Most of the bass
players in the Bay Area have vintage bass clarinets with
all sorts of funky additions, modifications, and adjust-
ments made to them. I think Clark's is a Selmer 33, to
which he has doubtless made innumerable modifications
tailored to his hands and desired response. With so much
work put into that instrument, I imagine he brings it up-
stairs and sits it next to Clark Jr. every night at the
dinner table. It's not just a bass clarinet -- it's a
member of the family! Same goes for Don Carrol's old
Buffet, with that neato foot pedal for getting low C.
