Giora Feidman, as I know, is a forth generation of klezmer
musician. His father also played the clarinet. Even tough he has the
feeling and the tradition of klezmer he got a classical musical
education and became member of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO).
On the early 70s, on the occasion of a chassidic festival in Israel, he
became familiar again with his roots. From that point on, the way of
retiring from the IPO, and starting a new career as a klezmer, was clear
and short. He was the first one to turn from the Philharmonic into
klezmer. The main instruments in klezmer are the clarinet and the
violin. Thus, his contribution to klezmer was enormous. He opened new
horizons to the, then, closed circle of klezmer players. At that time
begun the renaissance of klezmer in the US and he found his way into it.
Now he is mostly performing in Germany.
