Hey Mark. I think I live in zone 9. My festival is being held in Suffern,
NY. That's over 45 minutes away from where I live! I don't know what
chair I am, but I know I made 3rd clarinet (eew). .well, at least I made
it-- and that's all that counts. I'm a little ticked because when I tried
out for Orange County All-County band my clarinet BROKE! It was my new
Selmer, too! =(
If you're ever near Pine Bush come visit as well. Ours is one of the best
as far as band is concerned in the county. This year we had 20 students
make the All-County band, and even some in the orchestra. (All thanks to
Mr. Brian Shaw- the best Band director I've ever had!)
I'm working on my articulation, and it's getting better. I've learned to
pull the clarinet closer to me (I usually played it with the bell up) and
put my left elbow out to get rid of the right-angle thing I had going
with my fingers to the top of the clarinet. (long story)
Hey, if you want to talk clarinet more you can e-mail me personally.

It was nice to hear from somebody ELSE who knows what they're talking
about. I can rarely talk clarinet with anybody around here. They're all
TRUMPET players! (Including my father-- any of you heard of Bob Hill?)

What Zone do you live in? I also made zone 6 area All-State (1st
clarinet 3rd chair--not bad!) and am eagerly awaiting the festival
coming up in 2 weeks. Fortunately for me this is one of the least
populated zones of NYS and all the clarinets that auditioned made it
in. I also am first chair at my school's ensemble but actually no big
feat. Lovely school, great people in the ensemble, incredible director,
but not that good. Oh well if anyone for some reason ever finds
themself in the champlain valley come and visit us.

You'll find a lot on this list in terms of pointers for improving
articulation. It is a topic that pops up occasionally and I know that
my articulation has been steadily improving. Still not perfect by a
long shot but then again I still have a long way to go as most of us do.

And don't worry, there's never a question too stupid for the Klarinet
list (j/k!).
