I just wanted to put my "two-cents worth" in on the mouthpiece discussion.
The last couple of years I have started having my intermediate to advanced
students go to a reputable local store to try out mouthpieces. The store
carries a good selection of mouthpieces that I consider acceptable. My
reasons for this: 1) the quality control doesn't seem to be as good as it was
previously for factory produced mouthpieces, 2) as others of you have stated,
there is not a one size fits all mouthpiece, other factors come into play
here.

As far as beginners, some will probably shudder at this, but if the stock
mouthpiece works and has no visible flaws, I don't get involved. I feel that
mouthpiece selection is better done after the student becomes aware of good
embouchure and tone production techniqhes.
