As for the professional player, (and even the high school student), the reed
strength must depend on the clarinet, barrel, mouthpiece, ligature set-up.
Some set-ups, (one with a close lay mouthpiece), demand a harder reed. For
the majority of my students, I prefer having them play a combination with
lots of resistance because I find that they must develop their embouchure
and breath support to get any kind of acceptable tone. Once they learn to
do that, it's almost impossible for them to play with an excessively open
sound & flat pitch in the upper register. Once they progress past a certain
point, (where they can perform some of the master works, I'm quite open to
experimenting with other types of combinations because, (having learned a
proper embouchure & practiced it over a period of time), they not only know
how to form a good embouchure but it's become almost second nature.
Therefore, they will not slip into the bad habits many exhibit when playing
a more open lay and a soft reed.
