re couesnon
in July 1956 ,just after graduating from u.western ontario-biz, not music, altho
I did take a half credit course in alto sax from prof alfred rose (e Acute),
Mahler's nephew, no less,
i bummed around europe for 5 weeks with a buddy. In paris, i went to the
opera and for 1 franc got a top balcony seat over the pit and heard the most
remarkable 1st clari.
At intermission, i rushed down to the basement to see if i could meet him. It
was Francois Etienne, also 1st cl. at societe des concerts du conservatoire. I
told him I played alto sax
and that I hoped to buy a clari in paris. could he suggest one and a store. I
never played a clari and knew zilch about what to get. He invited me to his
"downtown" paris studio the next day and then we walked to the couesnon factory
where he helped me select one for $75. When I said i didn't know what book to
study, we went back to his studio and he sold me,for $2, his methode complete
de clarinette h klose, that he wrote with ch murky-text in
french, english, spanish. then he gave me me my first cl.lesson. Imagine, with the
principal of the paris opera! One more lesson the next day, too. Then we left
paris
and when we got to lucerne, I heard another fab soloist. Another lesson.
Now, when people ask where i studied, I say, with a straight face, "Why, in
Paris and Switzerland!"
anyhow, david, that's where the couesnon plant was in 1956.
BTW, my kids were born in 1960 & 62 and they've heard about couesnon. But then
they've heard my boring story a hundred times!
