I have always heard ( and played) f#-g#-a#. . .the a# carries over from
earlier in the bar. This makes more sense to me than the chromatic
substitution you mention. Keeps in the whole-tone pattern of the thing. On
the
other hand, the only person besides me I have heard play the piece is John
Mohler (monster performance). He had an arrangement for band that he used to
do with Revelli. >>

I would have loved to have heard that performance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
