Hello Listers,

Has anyone out there played the Second Hungarian Rhapsody by F. Liszt?
I'm playing it next month in the arrangement by K. Mueller for orchestra
(never got past Baby Bach on the piano). That is, I'm surely playing
*most* of it. There are, however eight measures which have got me really
worried. O.K., I've seen them in the orchestral excerpt books but never
really took this one all that seriously.... But now ... gulp!

If you've played it, you'll know which measures I mean but just for the
record, it's in the section "Tempo giusto Vivace marcato assai". The
first 16th note passage (4x F# D A D F# D A D F# D A D D) is fine with
open high D 16ths and slurring by twos. I can get away with that, I
think with a good not too soft reed. Are you orchestral clarinettists
reading this? But the next section is the whopper! (II:4x A'' F''' C'''
F''' 4x Bb'' F''' D''' F''':II - all 16ths)[II: and :II are supposed to
be repeat signs]. My *fingers* will do it -- but I don't get the
register changes between the clarinet and altissimo registers fast
enough. I'm reckoning with an approx. tempo of quarter note @-----. The
problem will probably be even worse when I've played the whole rest of
the piece before that.

Up till now, my only workable solution is to leave out the high F's.
Don't have a score and haven't rehearsed yet so don't know if I can swap
notes with somebody or if it's doubled (picc.?). In any case the passage
is not to be heard in the recording with Stokowski and the RCA Victor
Symph.Orch. This doesn't make me feel better tho' because there are many
changes compared to our version and this could be one of them...

If anybody knows what will help, please tell me! If you're worried that
a *conductor* will read about the trick - I promise never to tell one of
those!

Well, this wasn't easy for me. (<David who? Ah, the one who can't do "A"
F"' C"' F'" ...>) Hope someone can help me.

David
