I am one of the lucky ones who never had to work on producing a good Bb
tone--I started out on a Bundy with a Mazzeo mechanism and went on to a
Selmer Series 10 with the same mechanism. It has been trouble-free all
these years and produces a beautiful Bb every time. The fingering for
the Bb depends on what note you're going from and to. Going over "the
break" is also a snap. With a quick switch on the instrument, you can go
back to regular fingerings.
Unfortunately, there aren't many Mazzeo clarinets around any more. I
never could figure why it didn't catch on better than it did. I guess it
was because Mazzeo worked exclusively with Selmer.
If Galper's tube works on many instruments, I think it would be great.
Clarinetists can have their choice of brands and have the clear Bb too.
