I am a Norwegian and has played The "Valdresmasj" by Johannes Hansen =
sevral times and it begins with a=20
CLARINET solo and thats it. However, I have never heard it by a marching =
band on parade,it is always performed as a concert piece.The version =
beginning with a trumpet solo must be an American marching band =
arrangement intended for parade, since one single clarinet is to soft to =
be heard in a parade.
The march is based on the Valdres Regiment signal and the obligato is a =
norwegial folkdance "halling"danced by young men to show strength. A =
girl stand on a chair with a long stick with a hat on it, and the men =
dancing in a circle and try to kick the hat down, the hat going higher =
for evry round. The man who kicks the hat down at the last hight is the =
winner.The obligato halling should be played with all the trills and =
ornaments since that is the way it is played in the tradition on the =
fiddle.=20
