I do this also, shortening V12 3 1/2s for my Bay mouthpiece (Charlie
recommends this for the mouthpiece, actually inscribing it along the
bottom of the mouthpiece).

I don't play much E-flat anymore, but should have quit while I was
ahead. I had a pretty good record -- I would have retired undefeated,
but I took on Bolero, and the eefer won. The first note of the solo
wouldn't speak. Bolero is pretty boring without the solo line (some
would say it is pretty boring WITH the solo line).
