Yep. I've played first, and alto, and bass, but prefer contra. I
currently play Eb and Bb contra (depending on the music) with the San Jose
Wind Symphony. I've also played 1st bassoon, but, again, prefer
contrabassoon when I can find one. Particularly in orchestral works, the
sensation of holding the root for the entire ensemble has to be experienced
to be believed.
