Hi Eugene:

In my humble opinion:
I find Van Doran reeds, in general, to be very inconsistent. The type of
music you play, the type of tone you are striving for, your instrument and
your mouthpiece, ligature set-up, not to mention your embouchure development
and characteristics all must be considered in choosing a reed. If you are
playing "classical" music and like a "dark" sound, I would recommend the
"Grand Concert" thick blank reed, which is similar to the Van Doran "V12"
except that it is more consistent. Others you might want to try might be
Marca, Alexander Superial, Glotin Classical, Queens, Olivieri Cane, or
Zonda. For a really bright sound, try Mitchell Lurie, LaVoz, Ricco, Ricco
Royal, to name a few.

It really all depends on what you want and what equipment you're matching it
to.

Hope this helps,
Carl Schexnayder
