For what it's worth:

I'm playing bassett horn in the clarinet choir here at DePaul (which has
been invited to Belgium for Clarinetfest) for an arrangement of Mozart's
Marriage of Figaro. In a coaching by Mr. Larry Combs, he said to use
less air. That struck me at first, however, it makes a lot of sense
because when you use too much air it becomes extremely "honky" in the
upper register and extremely spread both in the low and upper registers.
The sound, I might add, in the upper register sounds like a saxophone.

About intonation: I find that it is easy to control your pitch. It
isn't hard to hear at all.

Does this all make sense?

Ciao!
