The US News & World report in February had an article that completely
misstated archival qualities of CDROMs. The article (and a further one
in the Washington Post) was of dubious quality in whole.

The US Government Archiving studies put 10 years as a minimum if the
CDROM-R (recordable CDROM material, not your music CD, which is made a
totally different way) is stored in an area which has constant UV
bobardment. They estimate the usable lifetime to be in excess of 50
years, and digital recordings can be duplicated exactly well before
their alloted lifespan.
