I have recently been trying out Buffet R-13 "A" clarinets. Several of these
had a strong tendency to sound subtone when I played clarion-register notes
"a", "a flat", and "g". I am aware that a longer register tube is used for
the "A" clarinet but often this is changed out for the shorter tube (used in
Bflats) to accomodate American players. Why is the longer tube in the R-13
"A" clarinet suitable for the European embouchure/appraoch and not for many
American players?
I am intrigued about the comment concerning the interior shape of the
register tube (Chuck West). Do the interiors of Buffet R-13 register tubes
differ between the "Bflat" and "A" clarinet or is the difference simply a
matter of length?
