If you play a B, one line above the stave, especially on the A clarinet,
and then do a diminuendo, you may find that a subtone, pitched around G
(bottom space) creeps in. This is irritating if you're playing the
Schubert 'Unfinished' slow movement solo, for example.

I've been taking it that this is what is being referred to by the term
'grunt'.

If you don't get this, then don't worry, you're doing something *right*.
(Unless the composer asks for it. Then, you'd be *wrong*, of course:-)
